I’ve been using newshosting.com for ages, getting a consistent and reasonable download speed of 500 KBytes/sec from their servers. However they don’t take Maestro, which is making my subscription payments a little problematic. I was all set to switch service when I noticed that they’re now offering a European Usenet server. What a difference. This morning I’ve been averaging a whopping 3 MBytes/sec download. That’s Bytes not Bits! That’s very fast. So I’ll stay where I am.

Virgin Media swapped over my modem at last. After a bit of confusion around MAC addresses it’s up and running. I’ve never been able to get over 4 or 5mb before – now I’m getting over 12mb. That’s a fair bit off the promised 20mb, but VM seem to be having some teething problems with the 20mb service at the moment, so what I’m getting is very good.

According to Cable Forum, NTL are currently trialling 100mb broadband.

ARRIS and ntl, last week, announced field trials of a 100 Megabits per second (Mb/s) ultra speed data service using the ARRIS FlexPath channel bonded solution incorporated in its Cadant C4 CMTS and Touchstone Wideband Modem. Following successful Lab trials, field trials are to commence in March.

That’s pretty impressive, a far cry from the dialup connection I had a little over 4 years ago. It’s surely an irritation to Roy, still stuck on a mere 512k broadband. Let’s hope that IF this makes it to consumers, we get a nice fast upload too.
